You do not need a majority…for truth to prevail.
Truth will prevail because we do not compromise
with our enemies…we BEAT them!”
It was the years of 1961-1965..Americans
in the South, North, East and West were
celebrating, commemorating and honoring
the brave men who fought in the
War for Southern Independence.
This celebration caused a renewed interest for
the years of 1861-1865. What was myth?
What was truth? The Sons of Confederate Veterans
saw a surge in new members as men of the South
began to understand the importance of honoring their ancestors.
I was but a mere child in grade school during the centennial of the War Between the States, but I do remember (although vaguely) special events taking place at that time. It was not until I was in the eighth grade when our class went to the Mansfield, Louisiana Battlefield Park, that I felt drawn to this period in our history. Like every one of you, I have a very strong connection to the greatest generation that this country ever produced…the Southerner.
It is now, on the eve of the Sesquicentennial of the War of Northern Aggression, that we MUST act! Needless to say, the media as well as the politicians’ attitude and response will be greatly different from that of 50 years ago…..thanks to the history revisionists, propagandist and myth mongers. However difficult it will be to get our message out, the Sesquicentennial will be the best chance for the men of the SCV to swell the ranks of our organization. One man cannot do it. One small group of men cannot do it. It is going to take everyone in every camp, every division and every army to work at making the Sesquicentennial successful in new members, membership retention and educating the masses.
We all know the media will not give us the time of day, all the while, the intruding northern army will get all the “good” publicity. We will just have to work twice as hard so that our efforts will bring in members.
Once a new member has come into the fold of the SCV, it is up to the local camp to keep that member, as well as all members, involved and active. The camp should make each member feel wanted and that his participation is appreciated.
There is no “one” solution to membership retention, but if a camp involves new members in its activities, the percentage is high, he will stay.
